Water Filters – Personal and Family

In a SHTF situation, water is an essential item that is necessary for survival. Generally, we cannot survive more than three days without water; that is a very sobering fact. So it is important to plan carefully, and thoughtfully, when it comes to drinking water.

One of the most important prepper skills to learn is how to make water, any water, drinkable, (assuming, of course, that there is water in your locale). Whether you are sheltering in your home, or elsewhere, or are on the move in a bugout situation, you need to plan a way to have potable water.

You need several methods of purifying water: storage, filters (household, and personal), chemicals, and distillation, etc.

The following is a potpourri of water filter for personal use, such as the Sawyer Products, and whole house filters. Choose wisely, and make the assumption that even the water coming from your tap is hazardous, full of biological gunk. Some filters are for taste, and are not really suited for SHTF scenarios. (I am partial to water distillation in a shelter in place scenario.)

The personal straw-type water filters are a good choice for bugout bags; when comparing straws be sure to check the gallons of water that estimates, and read the reviews. I am partial to the Sawyer Products, and have included them in my bugout bags.

I’ve never been a fan of water treatment tablets, and in my backpacking days I opted for MSR pump-style water filters.
